“You think you’re the painter, but you’re the canvas”
– John Green, Turtles All the Way Down
Trigger warnings: anxiety, OCD
As soon as I finish any John Green book, I feel as though that it was a great book, BUT after thinking about it after a long time, I’ve decided that Turtles All the Way Down was an okay read.
The anxiety and OCD that Aza has in the book was portrayed absolutely amazing! It was really nice to read about a character such as Aza who has anxiety (as myself) and OCD. The mental health representation that this book had was also amazing. It was educational and it showed the reader exactly how its like to be in the mind of someone who has anxiety and OCD. I LOVED how Green showed us how distracted Aza can get with her mind spiraling off in different directions. Noah, Davis’ little brother is probably one of my favorite characters besides Aza. I felt so bad for him at one point that I just wanted to reach into the book and hug him.
One (out of the many) things that I did not like about this book was the best friend to Aza, Daisy. The way that she talks to and about Aza infuriates me SO much to the point where I had to put the book down multiple times. I also felt that the plot was not the major point in the story, it was mostly focused on Aza’s mental illness. The surface plot would be finding out what happened to the billionaire but the internal plot was Aza’s mental illnesses. Another thing I did not like was Aza’s attitude toward her medicine. There are a few more things that I dislike about this book but I do not want this review to be negative so let’s move on.
Almost all of John Green’s books (if not all of his books) are very quotable and I found many quotes in this book that I love and will stick with me. If I do ever reread this book it will be just to find good quotes. In all, Turtles All the Way Down was an okay read as all of John Green books are. I enjoyed this book enough for it to receive 3.5 stars.
Hope you all enjoyed this review.
Just a disclaimer, this review is not to discourage anyone from reading this book, it is a great book but it is not one of my favorites. If you like the book, that is amazing, John Green books are not for me though. Just remember we all have different tastes in reading. 🙂
